Hi, I am Hasan student in IB learning the ways of knowing and how we know for my first blog post I will be commenting on 5 senses which are:
My claims on the article "Memory contaminates perception".
- Nociception: Is the sensory nervous system's response to certain harmful or potentially harmful stimuli. An example would be the pain you feel when someone punches you.
- Chronoception: This is the sense of time. An example would be when you are late for work you feel the time is speeding up.
- Proprioception: Is the sensation of moving without having consciousness. An example would be a muscle spasm.
- Equilibrioception: Is the sense of balance, an example would be it helps humans and animals from falling over.
- Thermoception: The sense in which organism perceive temperature, an example would be when it is a hot day and you go outside you feel hot.
1st claim: The first claim I am going to make is that memory does contaminate perception and "How we feel affects how we see". I agree with that statement as you will see things in a negative aspect if you are feeling sad, furthermore, the affect happens to contaminate our memory because of our bias view on the matter at that time.
2nd claim: The second claim I am making is that our memory does try to fill in the gaps thus forcing a false image on the matter of what happened. A study was done to show whether the brain was reliable participants were asked to talk about the 9/11 incident 2 times first time was recently and second was a while back when it happened, the scientist determined that the participants said 2 closely resembling answers but were different in many small ways some incidents that were stated int he recent asking had never occurred.(the name and date of the study are unknown).
To close the unit answer this "How reliable is sense and perception?"
It is not reliable as we have covered that memory can be faked and can manipulate your mind into pleasing yourself. Sense and perception are manipulated on a daily basis by magicians and illusionist, leaving the public in "AW" this proves that our senses and perception is not as reliable as we think it is and is only there to be manipulated in our liking so it is easier to understand, as we all know that humans fear what they do not understand and thus our minds try to cope with that fear by giving us false memory and perception.
